Literacy Lift-Off
This week we have launched a Literacy Lift-Off initiative in our 1st classes. This is an intensive reading programme, giving your child lots of opportunities to read books at their own level of ability. It will run for eight weeks and aims to increase the reading and writing level of pupils, as well as their confidence and enjoyment around reading.
Literacy Lift-Off takes place each morning (Monday - Thursday) where the children will benefit from having five teachers in their classroom, running five activity stations.

Station 1: Familiar Reading
At this station, each child has an opportunity to read a previously read book for the purpose of enjoyment, fluency, comprehension and speed. The teacher draws the group's attention to various concepts of print and encourages reading with expression. |
Station 2: Word Work
At this station children use magnetic letters and boards. The teacher shows the group how words are composed of letters and common parts of words that sound the same. The group will be involved with various word work including letter words, segmenting words, rhyme, cvc words, blends and diagraphs. |
Station 3: Writing
The children will learn how they can write their own messages by hearing and recording sounds in words, using analogy, learning unusual words and creative writing from visual cues and pictures. Children are given a blank copybook with a writing page each day. The teacher models writing with a whitebaord and marker and draws attention to specific words. Children are encouraged to 'have a go' when spelling new words. |
Station 4: New Reading
Children learn to use strategic activities to read new texts. The teacher prepares the group for success by discussing the cover/ title/ picture walk through book and introduces them to any new or tricky words. Children are encouraged to read with fluency and to monitor his/her own reading. The book is taken home by the children to read with their parents each night and if finished it becomes familiar reading for the next day. |
Station 5: Activities
Children will be involved with various activities depending on the literacy needs of the class. These may include handwriting practice, oral language, comprehension skills and sight word activities.
